Did You Know You Have Three Voices?
Apr 08, 2025How your vocal variety, velocity, and volume tell the best story
Do you like the sound of your own voice? Almost no one does – at least not in the beginning.
But did you know that you have 3 different voices to do different jobs at different levels and paces for different goals? Your voice is the tool that helps you influence, impact, and inspire in business and in life and here are the 3 voices you can use.
The first voice is your strongest, most authoritative voice and it comes from deep in your chest when you want to make a point. Your second voice is your normal, relationship building voice that you generate easily in your neck for pleasant communication. And finally, you have your soft, inspirational voice that comes from the front of your mouth for when you want to motivate.
Of course, to be the most influential, you wouldn’t use any one of them all through a presentation. Always speaking authoritatively can come off as harsh. Always in a relationship voice can come off as flat. Always sounding inspirational can come off as weak. You see, it is in the contrast among these 3 that you tell your story best.
The velocity and volume of your speaking voice matters too. Slower is more authoritative. Faster gets across more information in less time but is less serious. Higher volume gets attention but so does lower volume. It just depends on whether you want to wake them up or get them to lean into your story.
As they say in music, your voice is your instrument. Vocal variety, velocity, and volume help you play it well for best results.
